Create subject manuals that are a reflection of what each student has learned and practiced during their classes with Summit Montessori Teacher Training Institute.  The manuals are to be a resource for each student as they begin their career as a Montessori Teacher and will be assessed according to the criteria listed below.

Assessment: Montessori Early Childhood Observation

Each manual will be reviewed and awarded up to 5 points per category for a total of 20 points.  Lowest acceptable points for passing is 12.  Assessment will be based upon the following criteria:

EC112 – Practicum


Teaching experience in approved Montessori classroom under supervision

Practicum

Teaching experience in approved Montessori classroom under supervision of approved instructor or mentor.  3 hours a day, 5 days a week for a full academic school year. 540 hours total.

The practicum lasts for an academic school year.

Assessment: Practicum

Students in the practicum phase of the course, i.e., interns, must work in an approved Montessori Early Childhood setting a minimum of 3 hours per day, five days per week, for one full academic school year (540 hours). SMTTI is not responsible for finding a practicum site for students. It is the student’s responsibility to find an approved school to complete the required practicum.  There are 16 hours of required practicum seminars. Interns must attend all intern seminars.  Seminar dates are included in the schedule of courses (Gardening & Special Needs).  Interns will be visited three times by a field supervisor during the course of the academic school year.  Each visit will be a minimum of one hour and will be followed by a thirty minute conference with the field supervisor. It is the intern’s responsibility to arrange in advance for class coverage in order to meet with the field supervisor privately for the thirty minute conference. Practicum Supervisor will meet with supervising teacher or school director for a discussion on student’s progress after meeting with the student. Students are required to document all practicum hours.  Administration must sign off that the student has completed the required hours and send signed document to SMTTI on school stationary before the student’s transcript can be sent to AMS for credentialing.

The importance of including gardening as a necessary part of Practical Life and Botany in the 3-6 environments

Gardening (Practicum Seminar)

This class will give an overview o the importance of including gardening as a necessary part of Practical Life and Botany in the 3-6 environments. The adult learners will participate in hands-on garden/botanical experiences as well as be given a tour of the gardens (butterfly, flowering organic vegetable) and the abundant flora on the 10 acre campus of Summit-Questa Montessori School by the middle school students. The instructor will provide examples of how to introduce gardening from the preschool years through elementary using Montessori materials, gardening materials, books and actual participation in gardening activities. Adult learners will receive numerous hand-outs pertaining to gardening and botany.

Introduction to a broad range of special needs and learning challenges that may be exhibited by the students

Special Needs (Practicum Seminar)

This Special Needs overview will include a general introduction to a broad range of special needs and learning challenges that may be exhibited by the students in the adult learner’s classroom. The instructor will speak to the challenges and successes that may be attained in a Montessori classroom for the children who are not conventional learners. The instructor’s qualifications and expertise in the Montessori elementary classroom will lend a supportive hand to the adult learners who may be dealing with similar challenges in their classrooms. This will be accomplished through class discussion, sharing current research in the area of brain development and special needs, (by instructor as well as by adult learners in class) hand-outs and sharing of resources in this area.
